YOU ARE EXQUISITE

Stop everything. Let me sit with you and tell you
something.
You are exquisite.
We rarely realize this fact. There is so much to do, so
many places to go. We blur our vision and stop seeing
how exquisite we are.
There are so many snapshots of your exquisite nature. I
can see you: bending forward in a softly lit kitchen,
stirring soup and smiling slightly.
I can imagine your quick footsteps in sharp winter wind.
I envision you laughing at the dinner table, stopping to
answer a small child.
In our ordinary moments, we can find the exquisite nature
of our being. I invite you to hold these moments even
more closely.
Did you know…
That you are about halfway in size between an atom and
a star? And that there is evidence that baby stars burp?
Your very existence is exquisite, even if you do nothing
else.
We forget this.
Let me remind you of the dancing wonder of your body,
the leaping kaleidoscope of your mind and the holy
certainty of your soul.
Did you know…
That you are made up of about 72% water?
We are walking containers of water, trying to fit into
boxes. Float more often.
You are exquisite.
Don't defy my description. Twirl it over your head like a
glittering, dazzling cape of transformation.
After reading these words, you will be altered, slightly
indented, softer and more flexible.
As exquisite beings, we are also deeply gratefull.
I am gratefull for the goodness of people. We all smile
and speak through our pain and confusion. We include
others in our joy and hopefull moments. We reach out,
and in, surprising ourselves with our certainty.
I am gratefull for caregivers of every description. I have
witnessed so many kindnesses at the nursing home
where my mother has lived this past year. SO I am
gratefull to say that she will be going home this
December. After almost a year, after being told she
would never walk again, never go home. She is walking
and going home.
I am gratefull for you. I have received so much
sustenance and indelible connection through your
presence in my life. Thank you.

others, and learn to accept it

I SEND YOU…
A tiny device like a pedometer that keeps track of your
moments of gratitude. As your moments multiply, it fills
your bank account simultaneously. You walk in gratitude,
to the bank and gratefully withdraw the money that you
need, and share your riches freely.
In the midst of this winter, I close my office, put away
machines and phones, and go into a sabbatical from
"regular" life. I will write and paint, cry and pray, and
stumble around my meditation practice. I will forget and
remember, resume practicing and hold my inside
children tenderly. I will banish the inside critics and watch
them sneak back in the open window. I will sigh and curl
my body on the floor in the child's pose. I will resolve and
crumble, gain and lose, stretch and grow tense. I will
remain and leave quickly, I will enable and refuse, I will
attempt and quit. I will ramble and stride swiftly, I will
release and clutch, I will replenish and grow parched. I
will play and love, and get crabby in between. I will launch
new projects and scrub toilets and watch my cat eat
cheetos.
I will.
